How GoToBeach hand-picks every hotel we recommend

We focus on hotels and regions we know — not random holiday lists. Here's exactly what that means, and how a hotel earns its place with us.

What "hand-picked" actually means

"Hand-picked" is one of the most over-used phrases in travel. For a lot of websites it means nothing at all — the hotel is on the page because a system put it there, not because anyone looked at it. At GoToBeach it means the opposite: a hotel reaches you because a named member of our team has selected, contracted or reviewed it against a clear, consistent standard, and decided it is good enough to carry our name.

We are deliberately small and specialist. We cover five destinations — Turkey, Greece, Malta, Morocco and Egypt — and nothing else, because depth beats breadth. We would rather know a few coastlines properly than list the whole world badly. That focus is what lets us hand-pick at all: you cannot vouch for a hotel you have never understood, and you cannot understand a hotel in a place you have never spent time.

So a hand-picked collection is defined as much by what is left out as by what is in it. A curated list only means something if some hotels don't make it — and plenty don't. The point of this page is to be honest about how that decision is made.

How a hotel earns its place

Every hotel in our collection has been through the same path before it ever appears in front of you.

  • 1It is considered, not just listed. A hotel enters the process because one of our specialists believes it could be right for our guests — usually from years of working the destination — not because a feed dropped it onto the site.
  • 2It is checked, questioned and understood. We look past the brochure: the rooms you'll actually be given rather than the show suite, the restaurants on an ordinary evening, the walk to the beach at the time of day you'd really use it. Hotels are selected, contracted or reviewed by our product team and destination specialists.
  • 3It is scored against our hand-picked criteria. Every property is measured against the same written standard, so a five-star in Belek and a family hotel in Crete are judged on the same terms. The score isn't a marketing exercise — a hotel that falls short simply doesn't make the collection.
  • 4It is accepted — or turned away. Plenty of well-known names don't clear the bar, and that is rather the point. We would far rather lose a booking than put our name to a stay we wouldn't choose for our own families.
  • 5It is kept honest, season to season. A resort can slip between one summer and the next. Our specialists revisit and review the destinations they cover, because a hotel that earned its place last year still has to earn it this year.

What our hand-picked criteria looks at

Our hand-picked criteria turns a gut feeling into a checklist, so every hotel is judged on the things that actually decide a holiday — not the things that photograph well. The points fall into a handful of areas:

Location and transfers

Where the hotel really sits — the honest distance to the beach, the resort centre and the airport, and whether you'll be walking or relying on a taxi for every meal. Convenience is part of the holiday.

The room you'll actually get

We look at the standard rooms, not just the suite they want to show off — size, condition, noise, view and how well the family and connecting options really work.

Food and dining

The quality and variety of the buffet on a normal night, the à la carte restaurants, how long the waits are, and whether the board basis genuinely delivers what it promises.

Pools, beach and facilities

The pools and their heating, the beach and how you reach it, water park and sports facilities, and whether the spa lives up to the spa menu.

Cleanliness and upkeep

The detail that decides a stay: housekeeping standards, maintenance, and whether the hotel is being looked after or quietly running down between refurbishments.

Service and staff

How the hotel runs when it is full, how it handles problems, and the warmth and competence of the team — the things a photograph can never show.

Families and accessibility

Kids' clubs and age bands, baby provision, shallow safe swimming, and accessible rooms and facilities for guests who need them.

Value and who it suits

Whether the price matches the experience, and an honest view of who the hotel is really right for — couples, families, golfers, divers or first-timers — because the best hotel is the one that fits you.

Safety and protection

Fire and pool safety, food hygiene, and the financial side too: where a flight-inclusive package is sold, it is ATOL-protected against the failure of the package.

The full checklist sits behind every hotel decision; the areas above are the headline groups it covers.

What makes us say no

Turning hotels away is the part of hand-picking that most websites skip — and it is the part that protects you. A property is left out, or removed, for reasons such as:

  • A buffet or à la carte standard that has slipped since last season
  • A building site next door, or a refurbishment that never quite finishes
  • Tired rooms behind a freshly photographed lobby
  • Service that falls apart the moment the hotel is full
  • A "beachfront" that turns out to be a shuttle ride away
  • A price that simply doesn't match the experience

If a hotel only photographs well, that is exactly when we say no.

Hand-picked across all five destinations

Every destination we cover is looked after by a specialist who knows it first-hand, so "hand-picked" means something different and specific in each place.

Antalya, Belek, Lara and Side — from golf resorts to family all-inclusive, chosen by our Turkey specialists.
Crete, Rhodes and Kos, matched island-by-island by a Crete-born operations manager.
Hand-picked stays across the islands, chosen for location, character and value.
The Agadir coast and beyond — beach resorts selected for the kind of holiday they genuinely deliver.
Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam, chosen by a lifelong Red Sea diver who knows the house reefs.

Why hand-picked matters for you

When you book a hand-picked hotel, you are not gambling on a name you found on an aggregator. You are booking somewhere a person has stood, questioned and signed off — and who will be honest with you about whether it suits your trip before you pay, not after you arrive.

It also changes the conversation. Because we have already done the filtering, we can spend our time on the question that actually matters: which of our hand-picked hotels is right for your group, your dates and the way you like to travel. That is the whole point of being small and specialist rather than a search box with everything in it — and it sits at the heart of why people book with GoToBeach.

Frequently asked questions

What does "hand-picked" mean at GoToBeach?

It means a named member of our team has selected, contracted or reviewed the hotel against our hand-picked criteria and decided it is good enough to recommend. We cover only five destinations — Turkey, Greece, Malta, Morocco and Egypt — so we can hand-pick from places we genuinely know.

Do you visit every hotel before recommending it?

Our specialists inspect and review the hotels and destinations they cover in person, as part of selecting, contracting or reviewing them. Where a newer property is first seen by a destination specialist, our product team follows up before it joins the collection.

What is your hand-picked criteria?

It's a written checklist every hotel is scored against, covering location and transfers, rooms, food, pools and beach, cleanliness, service, families and accessibility, value and who the hotel really suits, and safety. Judging every hotel on the same terms keeps our recommendations consistent and honest.

Why isn't a famous hotel I've heard of on your list?

A curated collection only means something if some hotels are left out. If a well-known property hasn't earned its place, it usually fell short against our criteria or has slipped since our last review — and we'd rather tell you that than sell it regardless.

Are hand-picked hotels more expensive?

Not necessarily. Hand-picking is about suitability and honesty, not price. Our job is to find the hotel that's genuinely right for your trip and budget, and to be straight about the trade-offs — sometimes the best choice for you isn't the most expensive room in the building.

Which destinations does GoToBeach hand-pick hotels in?

We focus on five: Turkey, Greece, Malta, Morocco and Egypt. Each is looked after by a specialist who knows it first-hand, which is what lets us hand-pick rather than simply list.
