Morocco Holidays
Morocco offers two genuinely different holiday experiences within one country — the Atlantic beach resort of Agadir and the imperial city of Marrakech. GotoBeach covers both, and our Product Manager Thomas knows them from repeated personal visits. Whether you want sun, sand and a beach promenade, or souks, spice markets and a rooftop riad, Morocco delivers.
Morocco sits at a unique intersection in the holiday market — close enough to the UK to feel accessible (3.5 hours from London), warm enough for a genuine beach holiday, and culturally rich enough to be a destination in its own right rather than simply a sun-and-sand alternative to Spain or Turkey. It is the only destination in the GotoBeach portfolio where a dedicated beach resort and a UNESCO-listed imperial city are available in the same country, with the option of combining both in a single holiday.
It is also, in Thomas’s assessment, one of the most consistently underestimated destinations in the UK market. Guests who go expecting a functional all inclusive beach holiday frequently return having discovered something considerably more interesting than they anticipated.
No visa required
UK passport holders do not require a visa for Morocco for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Always check gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/morocco before booking.
Close to the UK
Agadir is approximately 3.5 hours from London by direct flight. Marrakech is around 3 hours 40 minutes. Both airports are served by direct flights from multiple UK airports, including London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester and Birmingham.
Beach and city in one country
No other GotoBeach destination offers both a dedicated beach resort (Agadir) and a major imperial city (Marrakech) within a single holiday framework. A twin-centre combining both — typically four nights in each — is one of GotoBeach’s most popular Morocco options.
Excellent all inclusive value
Agadir’s all inclusive hotels offer strong value for money — comparable to Turkey in terms of what you get for your budget, with the added dimension of Moroccan culture, food and atmosphere on the doorstep. The beach promenade, the souks and the restaurants are all accessible without leaving the resort area.
Year-round warmth
Agadir benefits from the Atlantic and is warm year-round — even in January, daytime temperatures typically reach 18–20°C. This makes Morocco one of GotoBeach’s strongest winter sun options. Marrakech is hotter in summer (35–40°C) and more comfortable in spring and autumn.
Taghazout — an emerging destination
Twenty kilometres north of Agadir, the surf village of Taghazout has evolved into one of Morocco’s most fashionable coastal destinations. Boutique hotels, beach clubs, consistent Atlantic swell for surfers and one of the most atmospheric dining experiences on Morocco’s coast. Worth considering as an alternative base for the right type of traveller.
“Morocco is the destination that most consistently surprises guests in a positive way. They arrive expecting a functional beach holiday and they find something considerably richer — the medina, the food, the Atlas Mountains on the horizon, the evening atmosphere on the Agadir promenade. It is a genuinely interesting country, and Agadir in particular is far more than its reputation as a straightforward sun destination suggests.”
Thomas — GotoBeach Product Manager, 28 years in travelMorocco’s two main holiday destinations for UK travellers are genuinely different from each other. Understanding that difference is the key to booking the right holiday.
Agadir
Agadir is Morocco’s all inclusive capital — a purpose-built resort city on the Atlantic coast with a 10-kilometre sandy beach, a beautifully maintained promenade and a hotel strip that runs the full length of the waterfront. Thomas considers it one of the great urban beaches in the world — comparable in configuration to Copacabana in Rio and Da Nang’s central beach in Vietnam.
Following a royal directive from King Mohammed VI, Agadir underwent a significant modernisation programme after the pandemic — the promenade, public spaces and hotel infrastructure have all been substantially improved. The results are visible across the city.
- Best for: beach holidays, all inclusive, families, winter sun
- All inclusive available: yes, strong selection
- Sandy beach: yes — 10km Atlantic beach
- Nightlife: Papagayo, Buddha Bar Agadir
- Day trip: Taghazout, 20km north
Marrakech
Marrakech is a UNESCO World Heritage city and one of Africa’s great cultural destinations. The medina, the souks, Djemaa el-Fna square, the Majorelle Garden, the Atlas Mountains on the horizon — Marrakech is not a beach holiday. It is a city break with extraordinary cultural depth and a hotel offering that ranges from budget riads to exceptional five-star luxury.
Most Marrakech hotels have pools — essential in summer when temperatures regularly exceed 38°C. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable and most recommended visiting periods.
- Best for: culture, couples, city breaks, foodies
- All inclusive available: yes, selected hotels
- Beach: no — 200km from the Atlantic coast
- Best season: March–May, September–November
- Day trip: Atlas Mountains, Ourika Valley
Agadir’s promenade is one of its defining features — a long pedestrian boulevard running the full length of the waterfront, directly on the Atlantic. You can walk, cycle, stop for a shisha, take a glass of Moroccan mint tea at one of the terrace cafés or simply watch the ocean at sunset. The combination of a 10-kilometre Atlantic beach, a promenade of this quality and the all inclusive hotel infrastructure immediately behind it makes Agadir Morocco’s undisputed beach resort capital.
Dining in Agadir
The promenade and streets behind it are lined with restaurants. For a genuinely memorable Moroccan dinner, Thomas specifically recommends Dar Tajine — a traditional Moroccan restaurant where the slow-cooked tagines justify the visit. For seafood and Italian cuisine in an exceptional Atlantic setting, Pure Passion in Taghazout (20km north) is one of the most atmospheric dining experiences on Morocco’s coast.
Nightlife in Agadir
Agadir takes its evening scene seriously. Papagayo is the city’s most established nightlife venue — a lively international crowd throughout the season. Buddha Bar Agadir brings the globally recognised brand to the Moroccan coast, with an impressive setting for cocktails and dinner that continues well past midnight.
Taghazout
The surf village of Taghazout, 20 kilometres north of Agadir, has evolved from a quiet fishing community into one of Morocco’s most fashionable coastal destinations. Boutique hotels, beach clubs, consistent Atlantic surf and a dramatically different atmosphere from Agadir’s main beach strip. Worth a day trip at minimum — or consider it as a base in its own right for a more secluded, nature-focused Moroccan coastal experience.

Do I need a visa to visit Morocco from the UK?

Should I choose Agadir or Marrakech?
It depends entirely on what kind of holiday you want. Agadir is a beach resort — sandy beach, promenade, all inclusive hotels, Atlantic swimming. Marrakech is an imperial city — souks, medina, culture, food, no beach. If you want a sun and beach holiday, choose Agadir. If you want a cultural city break, choose Marrakech. If you want both, the twin-centre option combining four nights in each is GotoBeach’s most popular Morocco itinerary. Thomas recommends starting in Marrakech and finishing in Agadir. See our full Agadir vs Marrakech comparison for the complete picture.
Is Agadir good for families?
Yes. Agadir is Morocco’s most family-friendly destination. The beach is long, broad and calm — the Atlantic here is sheltered enough for safe swimming. The all inclusive hotels cater well for children. The promenade is safe and walkable. Marrakech is less straightforward for young families — the medina is busy and the heat in summer can be challenging for younger children.
What is Taghazout and is it worth visiting?
Taghazout is a surf village 20 kilometres north of Agadir that has evolved into one of Morocco’s most fashionable coastal destinations. It has boutique hotels, beach clubs, consistent Atlantic surf and a dramatically different atmosphere from Agadir’s main beach strip. It works well as a day trip from Agadir, or as a base in its own right for guests who prefer a more secluded, intimate Moroccan coastal experience. Thomas recommends dining at Pure Passion there for seafood and Italian cuisine in an exceptional setting.
