Ikaros Beach Review: The Adults-Only Crete Resort I’d Book Myself
A stone-built village above a sandy beach, a few minutes from my front door — and after years of sending guests here, still my favourite hotel on the island.

What is Ikaros Beach?
I have a professional answer and a personal one when guests ask me where to stay on this part of Crete. Ikaros is both. It is the hotel I recommend most often to couples, and it is the one I would book for myself.
I live a few minutes away, which means I drive past a great many hotels every week. Familiarity usually breeds a shrug. Ikaros is the exception. It is built into a rocky, elevated stretch of coast rather than laid flat behind a beach, and it is put together like a Cretan village — stone walls, low buildings, lanes and steps between them, and gardens that have clearly been tended for decades rather than planted last season.
Since 2024 it has been adults only, for guests aged 16 and over. That is not a detail buried in the small print; it is the entire proposition. This is not a family resort with a quiet corner set aside. It is a resort designed for people who want the volume turned down.

Location — Why Stalida is the Right Choice
Ikaros sits on the coast at Stalida — Stalis, as most British visitors call it — on the north coast of Crete, east of Heraklion. It is worth being precise about this, because Stalida is often lumped in with its louder neighbours and it is a different place.
Stalida sits between Hersonissos and Malia, and it is much quieter than either. Guests who have only heard of Malia’s nightlife sometimes hesitate at this stretch of coast entirely. That reputation belongs to one specific strip a few minutes away, not to Stalida and certainly not to this resort. The practical advantage is that you have two lively towns within easy reach when you want them, and neither of them outside your window when you don’t.

Beach and Pools
Let me be clear about this, because the resort’s dramatic clifftop photographs give some people the wrong impression: Ikaros has its own sandy beach. Loungers, parasols and beach towels are provided free for hotel guests, at the beach and at the pools alike.
What the setting does mean is that the resort is terraced rather than flat. The buildings step down towards the water, so the sea is below and around you rather than simply in front of you, and there are sun terraces on the rock as well as the beach itself. For most guests that is the appeal. If your mental image of a beach holiday is one long, uninterrupted, entirely level sweep of sand outside the room door, a flatter resort will suit you better and I will happily point you at one.

The Look and Layout
Most resorts on this coast were built in one go and look it. Ikaros looks like it grew. The buildings are stone, low and separate rather than stacked, with lanes and steps between them and planting that has had years to fill in.
Practically, that architecture has one consequence worth knowing before you book: the ground is not flat. There are steps, slopes and uneven stone paths. Most guests find it charming. The hotel has ramps to the restaurant, pools and beach, and two garden-view bungalows are specifically equipped for guests with disabilities — though there are no pool lifts or hydraulic chairs. If mobility is a factor for anyone in your party, tell us and we will check room location and access with the hotel before confirming anything.
Rooms & Suites — Which One to Book
Accommodation is spread through the village in low-rise buildings and bungalows rather than corridors of identical doors, so the rooms vary more than at a standard block-built resort.

Food & Dining
Dining is spread through the resort rather than concentrated in one hall. The Olive main restaurant handles the buffet meals; alongside it sit four à la carte restaurants.
Olive
The main buffet — breakfast, lunch and dinner, with theme nights. Breakfast for all guests is served here regardless of board basis.
Ayeri
Authentic Mediterranean cuisine, intimate, with the best sea views in the resort. VIP breakfast and dinner service for guests in the suites and bungalows with private pool or jacuzzi.
Ammos Beach Restaurant
At the water’s edge, open through the day for lunch as well as dinner. One of the three restaurants included in the All Inclusive à la carte entitlement.
Sunset
Asian cuisine. Seasonal — open mid-May to mid-October only. En Lefko, the resort’s Italian-American restaurant, rounds out the à la carte line-up.
Half Board or All Inclusive?
Ikaros offers both, and the gap between them is wider than the names suggest. This is the decision that most affects what your week actually costs, and almost nobody explains it.

The à la carte entitlement is the part worth reading twice. On a stay of at least seven nights, All Inclusive guests get one complimentary dinner at each of Ammos, En Lefko and Sunset. Dine at them again beyond that and you receive a reduction of €12 per person off the bill rather than paying the full price.
Spa, Activities & Evenings
The spa is the part guests write to me about afterwards. It houses the heated indoor pool, along with a sauna and steam bath that are free for all guests, and a full treatment menu. There is also a gym.
During the day the resort runs a proper activity programme — yoga, aqua aerobics, water polo, zumba, stretching, table tennis, boccia and darts, plus tennis and padel courts. Bicycles can be borrowed from reception; they are ordinary town bikes rather than anything technical, but the surrounding coast is flat and pleasant to ride.
On the entertainment question I want to be accurate rather than romantic, because I have seen this hotel described as though nothing happens after dinner. That is not true. There is a different show every evening — live singing and dancing, traditional Greek and international dance, live bands playing rock, pop or jazz, and DJ evenings. The difference is that it is programmed for adults. It is live music you can talk over, not a compère with a microphone organising the crowd into teams.
Who is Ikaros Beach best for?

Beyond that, the sea-view categories are worth the upgrade here because the resort is raised above the water, and suites and bungalows with a private pool or jacuzzi include the VIP dining service at Ayeri.
Is there evening entertainment at Ikaros Beach?

May, June, September and early October are the sweet spots on this coast — reliable warmth, quieter resorts and better rates than peak summer. October remains warm here, with sea temperatures still comfortable. The heated indoor pool in the spa makes the shoulder months work better at Ikaros than at many neighbouring hotels, since the outdoor pools are unheated.
