Pickalbatros Hotels Egypt: An Honest Chain Guide from a Red Sea Specialist
My first proper Pickalbatros inspection trip was a long week in Hurghada in September, a few years before we started selling the chain to UK customers in any meaningful volume. I had landed in the afternoon, the resort minibus was full of British families coming back from a Giftun Islands trip, and by the time I reached the lobby a welcome drink was already in my hand. Three children walked past me in life jackets on the way to a waterslide. Somewhere a microphone was being tested for the evening show. And I remember thinking, very clearly: this is not a Greek-island hotel, and it is not a Maltese boutique. This is something else entirely. And whatever this something else is, it knows exactly what it is doing.
Quick answer — which Pickalbatros should you book?
First-time Egypt families: Palace Resort Hurghada or Royal Moderna Sharm. Aquapark-led holidays: Aqua Vista Hurghada or Aqua Blu Sharm. Adults only: Blu Spa Resort Hurghada. Premium Sharm with reef access: Royal Moderna Sharm. Quietest coast with the best snorkelling: Sea World Marsa Alam.

What Pickalbatros actually is
Pickalbatros Hotels & Resorts is one of Egypt’s largest privately owned hotel groups. The chain was founded in 1992 by Kamel Abou Aly, with the original Beach Albatros Hurghada opening that year in what was then still a Red Sea fishing town. From that single beginning, the group has grown methodically to a substantial portfolio of resorts across Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Sahl Hasheesh, Port Ghalib and Marsa Alam — with a smaller and newer presence in Marrakech and Agadir on Morocco’s two coasts.
A Pickalbatros resort is, in shorthand, a large all-inclusive holiday machine that takes its family proposition seriously. Most properties are large-scale resorts. The aquaparks are central to the proposition, not a bolt-on. The animation programme is constant. The Alba Kids Club operates at every family property. The buffets are wide rather than precise. The architecture is themed — Moroccan palace at Royal Moderna Sharm, contemporary Mediterranean blue-and-white at Aqua Blu, classical pillars at Palace Resort Hurghada.
What the chain does well, and what keeps UK guests returning year after year, is consistency. Every Pickalbatros property runs to a recognisable formula. The all-inclusive plan is comprehensive, the children are looked after, the entertainment runs every evening, and the price-to-experience ratio is among the strongest available anywhere on the Mediterranean basin.
If you arrive expecting Turkish ultra all-inclusive in the Antalya sense — multiple premium à la carte restaurants, imported spirits flowing at every bar, a tasting-menu standard at the main buffet — you may be disappointed. Pickalbatros is strongest when you want facilities, family convenience and Red Sea value, not ultra-premium imported-drinks luxury.
Direct from the founder — May 2025
At the opening of Pickalbatros Palais des Roses in Agadir in late May 2025, our Product Manager Thomas Kaplan put a question directly to Kamel Abou Aly, the founder of Pickalbatros: is the chain’s specialty strictly large all-inclusive resort hotels? The answer was telling. Mr Abou Aly explained that Pickalbatros is also moving into city hospitality — first across Europe’s major cities, then worldwide. But the immediate priority, he told us, is raising the quality of the existing portfolio before launching new investments: improve what we have before we expand.
From our team’s inspection visits since that conversation, the strategy is visibly being executed. Refurbishments, room upgrades and food-programme investments are showing across the Egyptian portfolio. This is not a chain coasting on scale — it is one in active improvement mode, which matters when you are deciding which Pickalbatros property to book this season.
The signature features across the chain
Before discussing the individual properties, it is worth understanding what unites them. Unlike Turkish chains that signature themselves through restaurants, Pickalbatros’s chain-wide signatures are entertainment infrastructure and family programming. These are not afterthoughts. They are the brand’s defining commercial assets.
Neverland Hurghada is the entertainment and waterpark complex linked to several Pickalbatros Hurghada properties, including the Jungle Aqua Park Resort and Alf Leila Wa Leila Resort. The complex includes themed evening shows of a quality that goes well beyond what a single resort can produce, plus one of the most substantial waterpark setups in Egypt — large enough that it draws guests from outside the Pickalbatros family on day passes.
Aqua Park City is the El Hadaba complex in Sharm El Sheikh that houses Pickalbatros Aqua Blu Sharm and Pickalbatros Aqua Park Sharm as sister properties. The complex spans roughly 150 acres and includes a 1,500-foot promenade lined with cafés, restaurants and bazaars. The shared waterpark facility includes a large number of slides across an adult section and a dedicated kids’ aqua park for younger guests.
Alba Kids Club runs across every family property in the chain. Activities are age-graded, the staff are professional, and the programme runs alongside, not instead of, the resort’s other facilities. I rate this consistently among the better-organised kids’ clubs in the Egyptian all-inclusive market.
The Hurghada portfolio
Hurghada is where Pickalbatros began and where the chain still has its deepest concentration of properties. The town and resort area sit roughly 5 to 10 miles from Hurghada International Airport, which is a short and comfortable transfer by Red Sea standards.
Pickalbatros Palace Resort — Hurghada
The five-star flagship of the Hurghada portfolio. Beachfront, with classical-themed architecture, a long stretch of soft Red Sea coast directly in front, and a wide range of room categories. Suits couples and families equally — it is large enough to absorb both without compromise. If you are first-time Egypt and want the Pickalbatros experience at the chain’s top tier, Palace Resort is the one I send guests to first.
Pickalbatros White Beach Resort — Hurghada
The sister property to Palace, sharing facilities. White-and-blue contemporary colouring, slightly more modern in feel than Palace, connected by direct walkways. Strong for families who want the bigger-resort experience but a more contemporary room product.
Pickalbatros Dana Beach Resort — Hurghada
A long-standing chain favourite. Family-led, with extensive grounds, multiple pools, and the kind of layout where children disappear for an hour and return with seven new friends from other British families. The beach is good. The buffet is wide. It is not the most stylish of the Hurghada properties, but it is one of the most reliably booked, and in my view one of the strongest value bookings in the entire Hurghada market for families on a controlled budget.
Beach Albatros Resort — Hurghada
The original Pickalbatros property, opened in 1992. Excellent location near central Hurghada, walking distance to the town’s restaurants and shops, and a strong all-inclusive plan. Suits guests who want some access to Hurghada town rather than being committed to a single resort compound for the whole week.
Pickalbatros Aqua Vista Resort — Hurghada
Aquapark-led property. The pool complex and waterslide setup are the headline. If you are travelling with children aged roughly five to twelve and the aquapark is the central reason for the holiday, Aqua Vista is one of the strongest candidates in the entire Hurghada market.
Pickalbatros Aqua Blu Resort — Hurghada
A separate property from the better-known Aqua Blu Sharm. The Hurghada version sits in the wider Pickalbatros complex with strong family facilities and direct beach access. Worth considering when guests want the Aqua Blu name but prefer the shorter Hurghada flight over Sharm.
Pickalbatros Blu Spa Resort — Hurghada (adults only)
The adults-only Pickalbatros in Hurghada, and a critical property to understand because it changes who the chain is suitable for. Blu Spa allows couples and adult groups who would otherwise look outside the chain to access the Pickalbatros all-inclusive experience without the children’s-aquapark soundtrack. It sits within a wider Pickalbatros complex, so the adults-only atmosphere is real but not isolated. In my view this is one of the most under-recognised Pickalbatros properties in the UK market — the chain is so strongly associated with families that many couples-only travellers do not realise an adults-only option exists. It does.
Pickalbatros Jungle Aqua Park Resort — Neverland Hurghada
Themed jungle architecture and direct access to the Neverland Hurghada waterpark complex. Suits families where the waterpark itself is the central reason for the trip, and guests who like a strongly themed resort environment rather than a contemporary one.
Pickalbatros Alf Leila Wa Leila Resort — Neverland Hurghada
An Arabian Nights-themed property, also linked to the Neverland complex. Distinctive in its architecture and atmosphere, and one of the more visually memorable Pickalbatros properties for families with younger children who enjoy the themed-resort experience.
The Sharm El Sheikh portfolio
Sharm El Sheikh is the chain’s second pillar, and the properties here have a meaningfully different character from the Hurghada lineup. The reef structure off the Sharm coast is some of the finest in the world — Ras Mohammed National Park sits a short boat ride away, the house reefs at several properties give direct snorkelling access, and the underwater experience is the genuine draw. The Pickalbatros Sharm properties orient around that reality.
Pickalbatros Royal Moderna Resort — Sharm El Sheikh
The premium five-star of the Sharm collection, located in Nabq Bay. Moroccan-themed architecture, expansive grounds, private beach with direct reef access, an on-site aquapark, and one of the most polished Pickalbatros products in the entire portfolio. For UK guests trading up from a four-star all-inclusive to a five-star and wanting to stay within the chain, Royal Moderna Sharm is the natural next step. I consider it the single best Pickalbatros property for couples who want chain consistency at a premium level without losing the family-friendly availability.
Pickalbatros Aqua Blu Resort — Sharm El Sheikh
The four-star resort with a five-star aquapark attached. Located in El Hadaba inside Aqua Park City, the resort itself has multiple outdoor pools and a wide range of restaurants and bars, but the headline feature is direct access to one of the most substantial waterpark setups in Egypt. The private beach is accessed via a free shuttle — not on-site, which matters and is worth understanding before booking. For guests who prioritise the aquapark and treat the beach as a secondary feature, Aqua Blu Sharm is excellent. For guests who want a walking-distance beach from the room, one of the Nabq Bay properties or Royal Moderna Sharm is a better fit.
Pickalbatros Aqua Park — Sharm El Sheikh
The sister property to Aqua Blu, sharing the Aqua Park City complex and the same waterpark facilities. Often a slightly more affordable entry point into the same setup. The Neverland-style evening show is staged here on selected evenings.
Pickalbatros Laguna Vista Resort — Sharm El Sheikh
A five-star Nabq Bay resort with multiple outdoor pools, an indoor pool, a private beach, a dedicated adults-only pool, and a children’s aquapark with a separate adults section. Strong for families who want Nabq Bay quality without paying the Royal Moderna premium, and for couples who appreciate the calmer pool option built into a family-friendly resort.
Pickalbatros Palace Resort — Sharm El Sheikh
The Sharm sister to the Hurghada Palace Resort, with a similar five-star positioning. A polished, calmer option for guests who want the Palace level of finish but in Sharm rather than Hurghada.
Sahl Hasheesh, Port Ghalib and Marsa Alam
These are the quieter Pickalbatros alternatives to the Hurghada and Sharm flagships, and three of the most interesting from a UK customer’s standpoint. They offer a different version of the Red Sea entirely.
Pickalbatros Citadel Resort — Sahl Hasheesh
Sahl Hasheesh is the upscale gated bay around 12 miles south of Hurghada — calmer, more spread out, with cleaner beaches and far less of the busy-town feeling. The Citadel Resort suits guests trading up from the busier Hurghada town hotels and wanting more space, quieter pool decks and a more residential resort feel. Architecturally one of the more distinctive properties in the chain.
Pickalbatros Sea World Resort — Marsa Alam
Marsa Alam is the longer flight, the smaller airport, and in my professional assessment the best snorkelling water on the entire Egyptian Red Sea coast. Sea World is the headline Pickalbatros property here — a large family resort that gives you the chain’s predictability in Marsa Alam’s reef-and-quiet character. The resort has its own house reef, accessed directly from the beach. If you have done Hurghada twice and want something different, Marsa Alam is where I send you.
The Port Ghalib cluster
Pickalbatros operates three properties in the Port Ghalib marina area near Marsa Alam Airport: Pickalbatros Oasis Hotel, Pickalbatros Sands Hotel and Pickalbatros The Palace Port Ghalib. Port Ghalib is a calmer, more contained resort area with a marina front, walkable restaurants and easy access to the better southern Red Sea reefs. Worth considering for guests who want quiet and convenience without committing to a remote Marsa Alam property.
A short note on Morocco
Pickalbatros also operates in Morocco, with properties in Marrakech and Agadir. That may be relevant for brand-loyal guests who want to combine an Egypt beach week with a Marrakech extension inside the same brand. This guide focuses on Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, but worth knowing the option exists — GoToBeach also specialises in Morocco.

How to choose which Pickalbatros
This is how I tend to walk guests through it when they ring us.
If the aquapark is the headline reason for the trip
Look at Aqua Vista Hurghada, Aqua Blu Sharm, Aqua Park Sharm or one of the Neverland-linked Hurghada resorts (Jungle Aqua Park, Alf Leila Wa Leila). These are the properties where slides and waterpark facilities are the main holiday feature, not a side amenity.
If you want a five-star within the chain
Palace Resort Hurghada or Royal Moderna Sharm are the two strongest five-star Pickalbatros choices for UK guests. Both offer the chain’s family infrastructure with a more polished room product and broader all-inclusive inclusions.
If you want adults only
Blu Spa Resort Hurghada is the single answer. The only adults-only property in the chain. Couples, friend groups and adult-only travellers who want Pickalbatros consistency without the family environment should start here.
If you want beachfront from the room with no shuttle
Palace Resort Hurghada, White Beach Hurghada, or Royal Moderna Sharm. These are the Pickalbatros properties where you can walk to the sea from the room without a transfer.
If you want a quieter coastline
Sea World Marsa Alam, Citadel Sahl Hasheesh, or the Port Ghalib cluster. These are the calmer Pickalbatros stays for guests who prioritise space, snorkelling and a slower rhythm over animation and aquapark energy.
If this is your first Egypt trip on a mid-budget
Dana Beach Hurghada or Aqua Blu Sharm. Both are reliable entry points into the chain that deliver good all-inclusive value and broad family facilities without committing to the five-star premium.
Strong fit for
- Families with children aged roughly four to fourteen — the aquaparks, Alba Kids Club, buffet timings and kid-friendly noise level make the whole week run smoothly.
- Multi-generational groups needing pools, aquaparks and evening entertainment alongside quiet corners for grandparents.
- Repeat all-inclusive travellers who value predictability — if you know what you want and do not want surprises, Pickalbatros is one of the most reliable brands in this part of the Mediterranean.
- Couples who like buzz, evening shows and a holiday with people in it.
- Snorkellers and beginner divers using the Sharm and Marsa Alam properties for their reef access.
- First-time Egypt travellers who want a recognised brand and a holiday that does the work for them.
Less suitable for
- Couples wanting a quiet, intimate, low-density resort — even Blu Spa, the adults-only option, sits within a wider complex. A Maltese boutique or a Greek-island Selection-tier resort is the better answer.
- Foodie travellers expecting destination-level gastronomy — the buffets are wide and generous, but you are not booking Pickalbatros for a tasting menu.
- Walking, exploring, culturally led holidays — these are sit-still resorts. A Morocco riad week or a Crete villa-and-tavernas trip fits that traveller better.
- Beachfront-from-the-room at every price point — some properties, especially Aqua Blu Sharm, sit set back from the beach with a free shuttle.
- Guests sensitive to noise and crowds in July and August, when the bigger Hurghada properties run at full volume.
- Spa-only or silent wellness travellers looking for a peaceful resort atmosphere all day — this is not the chain’s strength.
Practical tips before you fly
A few things I always tell guests before they leave the UK for an Egyptian Pickalbatros week.
- The Red Sea has coral. This is part of why the snorkelling is so good. It also means the entry to the water at some properties is via a jetty rather than a sandy walk-in. If you are travelling with very young children, ask us specifically about the beach entry at the property you are considering. Reef shoes are a sensible packing decision either way.
- Transfer times vary more than people expect. Hurghada Airport is around 5 to 10 miles from most Hurghada properties — a comfortable transfer. Sharm El Sheikh Airport sits closer to the Nabq Bay properties and around 10 to 15 miles from the El Hadaba ones. Marsa Alam Airport is the closest of the three to its resorts. Private transfers are easier than the alternatives, and we book them as part of the package.
- Book the à la cartes on arrival day. Every Pickalbatros property runs a reservation system. In high season the good slots fill quickly. The reception staff are used to this conversation. You will thank yourself on night three.
- Currency and tipping. Egyptian Pounds, US dollars and Euros are widely accepted at the resorts. Tipping is part of the culture — small notes for housekeeping, bar staff and restaurant servers go a long way and make the holiday warmer.
- Egyptian coffee. If you order it properly, it arrives small, strong and slightly sweet by default. Ask for "qahwa mazboot" if you want the medium-sweet version, the way most Egyptians drink it on a hot afternoon.
- Excursions worth doing. From Hurghada — a Giftun Islands snorkelling boat trip, a desert quad-bike sunset trip, a Luxor day (long but unforgettable). From Sharm — a Ras Mohammed snorkelling day, a Coloured Canyon trip, a Bedouin desert dinner. From Marsa Alam and Port Ghalib — house reef snorkelling, Wadi El Gemal National Park, the Sataya dolphin reef. We can build any of these into the booking.
Frequently asked questions
Which Pickalbatros hotel is best in Egypt?
It depends on the kind of holiday. For first-time Egypt with the chain at its five-star best, Pickalbatros Palace Resort Hurghada. For an aquapark-led family week, Aqua Vista Hurghada or Aqua Blu Sharm. For adults only, Blu Spa Resort Hurghada. For premium Sharm with reef access, Royal Moderna Sharm. For the quietest coast and best snorkelling, Sea World Marsa Alam.
Are Pickalbatros hotels family-friendly?
Yes. The chain is built around family holidays. Most properties have Alba Kids Club, multiple children’s pools, aquaparks of various sizes, and meal timings designed around families. It is one of the most family-friendly hotel chains operating anywhere on the Egyptian Red Sea coast.
Is there an adults-only Pickalbatros option?
Yes. Pickalbatros Blu Spa Resort in Hurghada is the adults-only property in the chain. It operates as an adults-only resort with its own pools and dining areas, while sitting within a wider Pickalbatros complex that gives guests optional access to additional facilities.
Are Pickalbatros hotels all-inclusive?
Almost all Pickalbatros properties operate on an all-inclusive basis as the default plan. The exact inclusions vary modestly between the four-star and five-star tiers — premium properties offer broader imported drinks, more à la carte access and longer service hours. Your GoToBeach booking confirmation will show what applies to your specific stay.
Which Pickalbatros has the best aquapark?
The Aqua Park City complex at El Hadaba in Sharm — shared by Pickalbatros Aqua Blu and Aqua Park — operates one of the most substantial waterpark setups in Egypt. In Hurghada, the Neverland complex linked to Jungle Aqua Park Resort and Alf Leila Wa Leila Resort operates at a comparable scale.
Which Pickalbatros is best for couples?
For couples who want the chain experience but a quieter atmosphere, Blu Spa Resort Hurghada (adults-only) is my first recommendation. For couples who want the chain’s five-star tier with reef access, Royal Moderna Sharm. For couples who want a busier, more animated holiday, Palace Resort Hurghada. For couples who want quiet Red Sea reef days, Sea World Marsa Alam.
How far are Pickalbatros hotels from the airports?
Hurghada properties sit within around 5 to 10 miles of Hurghada International Airport. Sharm El Sheikh properties range from a few miles for the Nabq Bay resorts to around 10 to 15 miles for the El Hadaba complex. Marsa Alam and Port Ghalib properties are usually within around 10 to 40 miles of Marsa Alam International Airport. Private transfers are the easiest option, and we arrange them as part of the package.
Are the beaches sandy?
Sandy in most cases, though entry to the water at several Sharm and Marsa Alam properties is via a jetty because of the reef structure. This is excellent for snorkelling and less ideal for very small children paddling. Ask us which property suits your group’s needs and we will tell you honestly.
When is the best time of year to visit?
For the chain overall, May, June, September and early October. The weather is reliable, the sea is warm, and the resorts run at full programme without the peak-summer crowds. July and August are excellent for full summer-holiday energy and the warmest sea, but the resorts are at their busiest. November to February is the cooler winter season — the sea is still swimmable for hardier UK guests, and the daytime weather is mild and clear.
Are Pickalbatros hotels good value?
Yes, by Red Sea standards. The chain is one of the strongest value-for-money operators in Egypt, with a mid-market positioning at most properties and an upper-mid premium at the Royal Moderna and Palace level. The all-inclusive plan and the scale of facilities relative to the price are part of why the brand has the loyal repeat following it has in the UK market.
Does Pickalbatros operate in Morocco?
Yes. Pickalbatros has expanded into Morocco with properties in Marrakech and Agadir. GoToBeach also specialises in Morocco, which means brand-loyal guests can book Pickalbatros holidays in either country as part of their package.
Is Pickalbatros Aqua Blu Sharm on the beach?
No — Aqua Blu Sharm sits set back from the sea within the Aqua Park City complex, with a free shuttle to the private beach. For guests prioritising the aquapark this is excellent. For guests who want to walk to the sea directly from the room, Royal Moderna Sharm or one of the Nabq Bay properties is a better fit.
